What Is Jimdo?

Jimdo is a website builder that allows you to create a website, blog, or online store. The best part – you can do all of this without knowing a single line of code.

Jimdo offers two different ways of creating a website, either through Jimdo Creator (where you can build your website from the ground up), or Jimdo Dolphin (Jimdo’s ADI solution).

If you like adding your own creative flair to your website, moving elements around, and creating everything yourself, Jimdo Creator is a solid option.

However, if you don’t have the time or simply don’t want to think about designing something for yourself, Jimdo’s artificial design intelligence (ADI) will ask you a few questions and do all the hard work for you.

Many website builders now use ADI as it’s a simple solution and it’s super quick to create a website. Check out my Wix review to see how other website builders do it.

Although I will touch on Jimdo Dolphin occasionally in this review, my Jimdo review focuses mainly on Jimdo Creator.

Pros & Cons

Ease of Use

Many people choose website builders because they are easy to use. If they were difficult, no one would use them and they’d receive very poor reviews.

Thankfully, Jimdo is easy to use and offers a clean and clear editing and design interface.

Signing up with Jimdo is simple; you can log in with Facebook or Google, or enter your email address, and create a password. It might seem trivial, but social logins are so handy because you literally have to click one button and you’re done.

Jimdo will ask whether you’re creating a website for yourself (or another individual), or for a team/business.

If you don’t want to answer Jimdo’s questions and design your website via ADI, you can skip any step you wish, and choose your own template.

Once you have a design or template at the ready, Jimdo’s editor is fairly easy to use.

You can click on any existing element or piece of content and replace it, add new items, or move it where you like.

Alternatively, you can open up the side panel on Jimdo’s editor to access items like cover, news, text, image, slideshow, music, and booking (there are lots more too).

Although the process was relatively simple, it’s hard not to compare Jimdo to other website builders I’ve reviewed. Whilst editing the existing content was easy, trying to change the format or template design was quite difficult.

The editor felt quite restrictive unless you were happy to use (or replace) what was there, rather than adding your own design flair to your website. If you’re happy to take a template and use it with minimal customisation, Jimdo is a great choice.

However, if you’re after more flexibility, you may find Jimdo too frustrating to use.

Templates

Jimdo offers over 100 different templates that you can use to sign up for their website builder.

Once you’ve selected your template, you can change it at any time (unlike Wix).

All of their templates include and are compatible with their features, including an online store and blog.

To begin, you can select between business, store, profile, personal, or all, to select your perfect template.

Unfortunately, you can’t preview a template before you select it, which is a bit of a pain, but not a deal-breaker for me. Once you’ve selected a template, choose whether you want to create a website, shop, or blog.

Whilst their templates are okay – they are just that I’m afraid. There’s nothing outstanding about them for me, and to be honest, some seem a little outdated.

Tools & Features

Jimdo’s templates may not be anything to shout about, but their features and apps thankfully do allow you to step things up a bit.

When in the editor, you can select ‘add element’ to see lots of features including buttons, store items, share buttons, GoogleMaps, RSS feed, table, and Guestbook. Honestly, the list goes on and on.

If you want to add plugins that Jimdo doesn’t have, they’ve partnered up with a company called POWr plugins.

POWr offers plugins like galleries, sliders, eCommerce tools, and forms. The big bonus is, its free to use with Jimdo.

At the time of writing, POWr and Jimdo’s partnership had 38 unique plugins on offer.

You can demo any of POWr’s plugins or add it to your site along with an easy tutorial.

Pricing

Jimdo has 5 pricing plans on their website plans and 3 on its eCommerce plans.

If you want to give Jimdo a go, the free plan is your best bet. You can test out whether their website builder is suitable for you.

Their free plan does come with Jimdo adverts and a subdomain, but it’s a great way to experiment with their features.

If you’re serious about creating a website and want the best on offer, Jimdo’s unlimited plan is your best bet. However, it’s very expensive in comparison to that of SquareSpace’s pricing or Weebly’s pricing plans.

Jimdo’s eCommerce plans are designed for people who want to sell products online. For this purpose, I wouldn’t recommend the £15 per month plan as it just doesn’t cover enough features that an online store requires.

Again, Jimdo’s pricing is simply too expensive when you compare it to other website builders who offer more features at a cheaper cost.

Customer Support

If you want to contact Jimdo directly via live chat or telephone, then you may be disappointed.

You can only contact Jimdo via email, social media, or use their knowledgebase and FAQs on their website.

Jimdo’s knowledgebase is much like any other website builder’s. You can search for the issue you have or select categories like basics, design, online stores, etc.

There are also promoted articles that tend to be their most popular.

It’s really easy to switch between Jimdo Creator and Jimdo Dolphin too, which you’ll find located at the bottom left of the knowledgebase page.

Can My Site Rank Highly With Jimdo?

SEO is important if you want your website to be found.

If you’re going to put the effort into creating a beautiful website, you’ll want people to reach it, surely?

The higher your SEO, the higher you’ll rank on search engines like Google.

Jimdo’s basic SEO tools can help with this, but they’re not going to nab you the number one spot.

You can edit information like meta titles, descriptions, customise your URLs. You can also add alt text to images, or if you want, use third-party apps to boost your SEO.

Whilst their SEO tools aren’t as good as some other website builders, they aren’t the worst either.

The fact you can use third-party apps is really useful as you can enhance your SEO as much as you like, with the help of other tools.

Summary

If you plan to create a small business website or personal website, Jimdo could be a good option for you. It offers plenty of features and apps and an easy-to-use platform.

Jimdo’s pricing plans aren’t the most affordable, in fact, they’re quite expensive compared to their competitors in the website builder market.

They do have a free plan which is a solid choice if you want to test them out beforehand.

Their editor is simple and their templates are basic, but there’s certainly enough to create a basic website. It won’t be stunning, but it will be professional.

If you want to create a powerful online store, you may want to consider another website builder like Shopify or BigCommerce.

Jimdo isn’t awful by any means, but it’s also not the greatest. If you want an out of the box solution though, Jimdo can offer this and they are a lot easier to use than some other website builders like Hostinger.
